For many, seeing Donna dancing down a sidewalk with headphones on and a smile on her face was a familiar sight. Known affectionately as the “Dancewalker,” Donna transformed an ordinary walk into a celebration of life, movement, and perseverance.
What many people may not have realized was that behind every dance step was an extraordinary story of resilience.
Donna’s life changed dramatically in 2005 when doctors discovered and removed a brain tumor that had gone undiagnosed for years. Following surgery, she experienced a traumatic brain injury that affected her memory, speech, vision, and mobility. She faced the daunting task of relearning many of the skills that most people take for granted.
Recovery was neither quick nor easy. Donna began by relearning how to walk, gradually rebuilding her strength and confidence. As her recovery progressed, walking evolved into speed walking, and eventually into the joyful, energetic movement that would earn her the nickname “The Dancewalker.”
What started as a form of exercise became a way of life. Donna carefully incorporated movement into her daily walks, using music as motivation, using her entire body walked through her community. Her unique style reflected both her determination to stay healthy and her belief that physical activity should be enjoyable.
Her positive outlook became one of her most defining characteristics. Even when faced with additional health challenges later in life, Donna approached each day with acceptance, optimism, and an unwavering commitment to living fully. Her ability to find joy in the present moment inspired everyone who crossed her path.
Beyond her role as the Dancewalker, Donna embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. She enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, drawing, music, and spending time outdoors. A certified scuba diver, she loved adventure and appreciated the beauty of the natural world. Above all, she cherished her family and treasured her roles as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
For the brain injury community, Donna represented hope and possibility. Her journey demonstrated that recovery is not always about returning to life exactly as it was before an injury. Sometimes it is about discovering new strengths, adapting to new challenges, and finding new ways to thrive.
Through her daily walks, Donna became an advocate without ever standing behind a podium. Her presence in the community challenged perceptions about disability and recovery, while her determination encouraged others facing their own obstacles. She showed that resilience can be expressed not only through perseverance, but also through joy.
Donna passed away on June 4, 2026, at the age of 70, but her legacy continues to inspire survivors, families, caregivers, and advocates throughout Vermont and beyond. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that even after life’s greatest challenges, it is possible to move forward with courage, purpose, and hope.
